Scotland was recently voted as the World’s #1 Cinematic Destination by readers of USA Today. Wouldn’t it be great to get married in a real location which you know from the silver screen?

In Scotland, if you opt for a Humanist ceremony, you can get married anywhere. So dramatic locations such as The Quiraing or Rannoch Moor which are well known to Hollywood are equally available to you to get married. There are also many locations famous from TV series such as Outlander, but those are for subsequent posts. In this article, we are concentrating on physical buildings which have appeared in a movie in which you can have your ceremony and possibly your reception.

And of course, if you are inspired to book any of these locations for your wedding, then Curious Robin Films can help you star in the film of your own wonderful day. Get in touch to book us.

Ardverikie Estate, with the main house rebuilt in the Scottish Baronial Style in the 1870s, was sufficiently grand as to stand in for Balmoral in the 1997 film Mrs Brown, starring Judi Dench and Billy Connolly as Queen Victoria and John Brown. Which as appropriate enough as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert stayed at Ardverickie for 3 weeks back in the 1840s. The Queen’s Wing was named after the part of the house she stayed in (the only part to survive a fire which destroyed the house).

The Estate was also used in the 2011 film, Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, starring Ewan MacGregor and Emily Blunt. Ewan’s character enjoys the delights of the estate’s rivers to cast his rod.

You can have a religious, humanist or registrar ceremony here.

Managed by the National Trust for Scotland Culzean Castle, located in a stunning setting on the Ayrshire coast, was the home of Lord Summerisle in the 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man. Now, that film isn’t exactly romantic, but the locations certainly were.

Fans of Monty Python & The Holy Grail will know Doune castle well, mainly because the film was shot on such a low budget that it was used for pretty much every castle shot in the film.

It is also a stunning venue for wedding ceremonies and photographs. Types of Ceremony: Religious and Humanist wedding ceremonies. Civil ceremonies by agreement with Registrar.

Insurance company employees make unlikely action heroes, but between the Thomas Crown Affairs and Entrapment, they have quite the track record. In this 1999 film, Catherine Zeta Jones spends her time trying to entrap master burglar Sean Connery . While they end up dangling from the Petronus Towers in Kuala Lumpur, they do take time to visit his home, which for the purposes of this film is Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull. This castle was restored in the early 1900s by Sir Fitzroy Maclean, whose namesake and relative, Maj General Sir Fitzroy Maclean is said to have been one of the inspirations for James Bond.

Duart castle will host the ceremony and can provide light catering, but doesn’t offer a full reception package. But there are few more stunning locations for you to get married in, or indeed for a castle to be situated.

Possibly the scene which is most featured on any postcard of Scotland is that of Eilean Donan Castle sitting on it’s watery bed. Despite the place it holds as an archetypal highland castle, it was actually a complete ruin until the early part of the 20th Century when, like Duart Castle, it was rebuilt in romantic splendour.

Not surprising of course, is the fact that it is popular with production companies. In the 1986 film Highlander, it is the home of the Macleod family and it is from here that Connor Macleod is exiled, walking away from the castle while every man, woman, child and their dog gets the boot in. Suffice to say, the hospitality has improved immeasurably since then.

It was also the Scottish headquarters of MI6 in the James Bond film, The World Is Not Enough.

You can get married in the castle but your reception will have to be held in another premises locally, though they can advise on suitable locations. Prices start at £1250 for small parties.

We’re getting slightly looser with our criteria here, but George Square in Glasgow stood in for Philadelphia in the 2013 zombie movie World War Z, which starred Brad Pitt. In the early stages of the film, when we first see the zombie hoard, the chaos takes place in front of the City Chambers. This building was built in the city’s Victorian heyday and is truly a wondrous testimony to the skills of the artisans who built it.

It has a wide variety of rooms available for wedding receptions but the only restriction is that weddings can only be held on a weekend.

This remarkable building was featured in the 2007 film starring Tom Hanks, based on the Dan Brown book of the same name. Rosslyn has an interesting architectural makeup, with much made of the masonic symbols and the presence of the pagan Green Man carving in a church. As it happens, a huge proportion of churches, all across Europe, have Green Men carvings or images in them.

Now, you can get married here, but you have to be a regularly attending member of the congregation so perhaps not an option for most people.

This place is a hidden gem in the East Lothian countryside. It is, dear reader, where the author of this post got married so comes with a personal recommendation. A deconsecrated chapel, it allows non-religious people to get married in the beautiful architecture of the old church (religions do seem to do architecture very well).

It was also used in a really very good film called Arn – The Knight Templar which you can watch on Netflix if you have a subscription. In the film they added in fake stone pillars but otherwise, the church is as beautiful as seen on screen.

It is open seasonally, from Spring to Autumn. It is only available for ceremonies, but you can hold your own drinks and nibbles reception (located in the beautiful gardens unless weather is terrible).

This is a working church so there is no surprise that you are able to get married here, assuming you are a Christian that is. What is more of a surprise is just how many times this has made an appearance on screen.

In The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969), the girls received a history lesson while walking through the kirkyard.

In Jude (1996), Kate Winslet’s character had the sombre (is there any other type of Thomas Hardy) task of burying her three children in the kirkyard.

Finally, and most obviously, although the films may have been made elsewhere the story of Greyfriars Bobby, the wee terrier who sat loyally on his master’s grave for years after he died, is intrinsically connected with the location.

A parish church, you can have a religious ceremony here and then progress to your reception in one of the many wonderful Edinburgh city centre venues.

Duns Castle was also used in Mrs Brown and stood in for Balmoral. Situated in the Scottish borders it boasts a stunning location surrounded by wooded hills. Steeped in history the estate has connections to Robert the Bruce and also has earthwork remains on a nearby hill of earlier forts.

Now, you can absolutely get married at Mar Lodge, which is a superb large house in the foothills of the Cairngorms. When we say it featured as a movie location in the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises, we mean the estate as a whole. In the scenes where Bane is introduced and establishes his brutal efficiency by having a plane hijacked in mid air, you may wish to take a moment to admire the scenery over which the planes fly, with ancient pine forests rolling over picturesque hills not far from Braemar (where Mrs Brown was set).

Mar Lodge is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and offers a range of facilities for all sizes of wedding receptions. They also have a cool Pinterest board if you want inspiration.
